Moment of silence at Palestine Pavilion at Cannes Film Festival 2018 : Nakba 70

Following the killing of over 60 Palestinians and more than 2 700 injured in Gaza by the Israeli army, Annemarie Jacir, Palestinian filmmaker and jury member of Un Certain Regard, convened with the rest of her jury, including Benicio Del Toro, Virginie Ledoyen, Julie Huntsinger and Kantemir Balagov as well as Palestinian minister of culture Dr. Ehab Bessaiso, Palestinian actor Mohammed Bakri and more than a hundred film industry professionals, to hold hands and observe one minute of silence in memory of the dead and in solidarity with the Palestinian People’s struggle for freedom and justice.

Annemarie Jacir then reminded the crowd that the people who lost their lives simply wanted to have their freedom and human dignity recognized, and that there are millions of Palestinian refugees still longing to go back home.

The minister of culture spoke about the effect the illegal Israeli occupation has on the daily lives of the Palestinians, affecting Palestinian children to the point that they are deprived of their dreams and hopes for a better future. He asked the crowd to remember that the people who died are not just numbers, but rather human beings and that their stories deserve to be told. Later on he also called for an investigation on the killings to enhance the stability by implementing justice according to international law as the way to achieve peace.
